The first cowboy hat was the Boss of the Plains hat. It has an open crown and a flat brim. The cowboys would shape their own hats by the way they would grab it.  The Boss of the plains hat was an important part of the cowboys woredrobe. It protects him from the rain, snow, sun and other elements .
