The term Fedora was used as early as 1891. It got really  popular, and eventually it got more popular than the similar-looking homburg dress hat. Fedoras have become  associated with gangsters and proabishon, which coincided with the height of the hat’s popularity in the 1920s to early 1950s. In the second half of the 1950s, it wasn’t the favorite anymore because people weren’t dressing up like they did. the 20s to 50s were the era of dress up. People dressed in suits and wore dress hats like the fedora.
