What is the original cowboy hat of the 1800’s. It has to be the Boss of the Plains hat. If you examine old photos from that era you will see almost all of the cowboys wore a Boss of the Plains hat. Even the eastern duds that got photos taken in the west would put on a brand new Boss of the Plains hat. It was mostly light in color to protect them from the blazing sun. It added more protection than just the sun. It kept their heads dry from the rain and snow, and it warmed their heads from the cold. It was an essential part of their wardrobe.
