The first cowboy hat was the Boss of the Plains hat. It had an open crown with a flat brim. It was light in color like a Bone or Sand. The crown wasn’t creased and the brim wasn’t rolled. The only shaping to the crown and brim were from wear and tear. The Boss of the Plains Hat was worn by the working cowboy all day and sometimes all night if the weather was bad.
